The Japanese Food Caravan

Update: No longer appearing at Ghuznee Street…

Walking down Ghuznee Street, as always, the Princess Caravan caught my eye. But this time I noticed another caravan with balloons and a large sign that included pumpkin soup. I stopped for a moment and read the blackboard, a mishmash neo-fusion with sausage sizzle, soup and tempura on the menu. I was curious.

A few days later, feeling peckish, I returned to the caravan. It has no name, but I have called it the Japanese caravan. This is because it produces a small range of delicious, Japanese inspired items. I was greeted with a friendly, welcoming smile and a “Goodday, how are you?” How could I not get reeled in? For $2 I bought shrimp tempura and within five minutes had three tasty pieces of deep fried goodness. I was hooked. Unfortunately they don’t do the shrimp anymore, but the selection is still good, especially the bacon..

Moving up the menu really has its rewards. My favourite dish so far is the pancake wrap. I have tried both varieties; bacon and apple salad with special ‘Ghuznee sauce’ and the banana cream. They are both fantastic and at $3.90 top value for your dollar, a little bit more expensive than a pie from the dairy but far fresher. The udon noodle goes down a treat as well.

The best thing is that they are honest people too; making sure to point out the fresh ingredients will take around 10 minutes to prepare. They even tried to give me a free wrap last time because they forgot the sauce during a prior visit. For a $2 buy-in its definitely worth checking out.
